Restoration Activities

The IP community is registered as an entity under the SEC as Melendez Ancestral Domain Incorporated which is led by Datu Nomer Melendez.

Datu Nomer is also the head of the Katutubong Bukidnon-Tagoloanon tribe.

This project aims to plant 1,667 seedlings per hectare of 12 native species. No trees will be planted specifically for timber.

CCCO2 will focus on FPIC and administrative processes such as stakeholder engagement and securing of rights from relevant government authorities in Year 1. Restoration activities will begin in Year 1 onwards where they plan to plant 200 ha, 500 ha in Year 2, and 300 ha in Year 3.

The focus is on restoring tropical grasslands and shrublands to native forest. This involves using local plant species and actively involving Indigenous communities in the restoration process.

The project site, currently consisting of tropical grasslands and shrublands, has strong carbon sequestration potential. While the total project area is relatively small, the net carbon accumulation is still high, as the vegetation is slowly regenerating on the site.

Community Engagement

The team also discovered that the local community is using a small portion of the land for agricultural activities. However, these activities are expected to have minimal impact on the project's carbon potential. The CCCO2 Philippine Corporation team has demonstrated a deep understanding of the local ecosystem and has a small but efficient nursery to support the restoration efforts.

CCCO2 prioritizes collaboration with local Indigenous Peoples. They are integral to decision-making processes and share in the benefits derived from the project's outcomes, ensuring sustainability and community empowerment.

Regulatory Landscape and Expansion Opportunities

One of the most exciting findings is the Philippines' plans to create harmonized regulations for Article 6 and VCM credits by the third quarter of 2024. This could provide much-needed clarity and attract more investment to the project. Additionally, the team has identified the potential to expand the project area to include a further 12,000 hectares belonging to other indigenous communities in Bukidnon.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

The CCCO2 Corporation team is dedicated to leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to make this project a success. With the right support and regulations, they believe their project can have a significant impact on mitigating climate change in the Philippines. As they look towards the horizon, they are filled with hope and excitement for the future of this promising carbon sequestration initiative.

Restoring Bukidnon's Forests:
A Promising Carbon Sequestration Project

The proposed project area is located in a portion of Sitio Kibuwa, Barangay Impalutao, Impasug-ong Municipality, Bukidnon Province, Region 10, Philippines. The project zone currently consists of tropical grasslands and shrublands, but would have naturally been covered in tropical moist broadleaf forest before anthropogenic changes.
